Clients regularly ask me how to work with their website. They might ask how to add a story in French. Or how to add a subscription for a new customer. I send step by step instructions. Sometimes I record a video or take screenshots. Then I update a private page on their website with that same information.

That page is only visible to site administrators and contains tips and techniques for managing the site.

This helps clients, particularly with tasks they do infrequently. I like adding this page within the site because then it’s right there when the client needs it. Another option would be to add these instructions in a shared space like Google Docs or Sharepoint. I prefer a page on the website for its availability and ease of use to anyone editing the site. It’s also a good resource for site administrators who may be added later to the site. They may not get or know where to access documents in a shared space but by virtue of having site access, they automatically have access to the site notes without anyone having to worry about special access.

If you don’t have such a page on your website I recommend setting it up. That will help you down the line as well as anybody else working on updating your website. There are always little tips and tricks for a website and this is a great way to capture that knowledge.
